Marathon, TX

Who would have thought that there are cute towns in the absolute middle of NOWHERE Texas? I went to Marathon for my friends bachelorette party and it was so fun. The little lazy  town itself isn’t more than what seems a mile wide, and it’s about 30 minutes from Big Bend National Park. I have an obsession with National Parks, and Big Bend is definitely on my list of things to do. When my little ones get a wee bit older we’ll make a trip out of Big Bend.

Getting to Marathon, TX:

From Houston it was an 8 hour drive. I know that seems dreadful but it really wasn’t bad. To break it up you can stay in Fredericksburg.

OR.. You can fly to Midland, TX and it’s about a 2.5 hour drive.

So… Driving in to Marathon I couldn’t help but notice how the sky seemed to change. It seemed so much bigger and bluer (is that a word?) and the clouds just popped out at me like 3D. It was breathtaking.

The Gauge Hotel was built in 1927. The historic charm takes you back in time. The staff is extremely welcoming and make you feel right at home.  There are also houses that can be rented out as well just behind the hotel. There is a heated pool, a spa, beach volleyball, a large outdoor chess game, a beautiful garden across the road to walk through, a few shops along the same street, a restaurant with DELICIOUS food and the famous White Buffalo Bar. There’s a restaurant called V6 that’s perfect for breakfast. You can get coffee, smoothies, pastries, breakfast sandwiches and gluten free options.

The hotel rents out bikes for you to ride around town. There is a home town grocery market the block behind the hotel, a gym across the way and a couple of places to have weddings or large parties. There are also some art galleries. The service at the hotel is impeccable and the food is top notch.

When you want a lazy weekend away or if your heading into Big Bend, stop in Marathon to stay the night or a few days and enjoy the comforts of Marathon, TX.
