I asked my Popee (my grandfather, pronounced pop-EE), “what is the definition of love?” His answer blew me away…
“Leave it to my Mel to ask a question that cannot be answered.
There are two questions that man has never been able to answer:
1.What is the meaning of life?
2. What is Love?
I believe the answer to #1 is #2.
I believe that man is here to love others. Momee and I have loved one another since we were teenagers–I was 16, she was 14 years old. We have never–never-questioned why. We just knew. There are many meanings of LOVE and many kinds of LOVE. There is passion, tenderness, understanding, companionship, compassion, caring, pride, gratitude, sympathy, and many many more, but the truest love combines them all. Momee and I have a unique, extra-sensory perception between us that is unbelievable. There are so many times that one of us will say something and the other will just stare in disbelief because we were thinking the same thing at the same time. I love those times. I love the times we are sharing a scene of nature, or our children, and we instinctively know the joy and love the other is feeling without ever expressing a word. We feel it.
I am so grateful for the life I have had. I know it is because of HER. Her love, her patience, her caring. She has made our children the generous and loving people they are. She has given me untold, uncountable years of happiness.
I know that my life will someday be over. I accept that…but I rage that I won’t have more time to share with my lifelong lover, my companion, and my best friend. No one ever has a perfect life, but I know that we came as close to it as any couple ever has.
Your grandmother and I are nearing the end of a long, happy journey. I hope that all of my children, grandchildren, and my exceptional great-grandchildren get to experience what we have had.
One day we will have to talk about the many other kinds of love that make life worth living–children, friends, relatives…
I love you,
P.S. Mel, you know what? You are the only one who could talk me into doing this.”
